Transition to primary school

Starting school is a big step for children and families. Our school runs orientation and transition activities to help your child feel ready for Kindergarten and to support you as parents and carers.

Read the Getting ready for primary school guide for detailed tips and checklists.

Before your child starts Kindergarten

Enrolment interview

Before your child begins, all families meet with a member of our office staff. This is a time to share:

We want every child to feel safe, supported and included in school life.

The office staff may direct you to speak with our Deputy Principal or Assistant Principal who look after Kindergarten.

Additional Transition programs for Kindergarten

Beginning School Well
We invite a small number of students to attend four sessions on Wednesday mornings at the end of term 3. The group typically involves students who have not attended pre-school.
Kids to Kindy
Kids to Kindy is a program which runs on four Wednesdays at the beginning of term 4. This helps our newest students become more familiar with our school and get to socialise with some new friends. It is also a great time for our staff to get to know our new students.
Kindy Orientation Expo

Kindy Orientation runs over two weeks in term 4 in November. The entire group of kindergarten students is invited to attend. They get to learn about routines at school and will complete some fun learning activities in English and mathematics. Attending these sessions allows your child to become familiar with their new school.

In the second week of our orientation program, we hold a special Kindy Expo where parents and carers can come to the hall and visit numerous information tables to interact with staff and gather flyers and brochures to learn more about our offerings and how we support our students at school.

Kindy Orientation Expo

At our Kindy Expo you will receive an information pack. This pack will include things such as:

  • Bonnyrigg Heights Public School Handbook
  • School Information Booklet
  • Getting ready for Kindergarten at BHPS Booklet
  • Parent and carer guides
  • School library bag

What to expect in Kindergarten

Learning and development

Kindergarten follows the NSW curriculum. Children build early skills in literacy, numeracy, creative arts, health and physical activity, science and technology. Learning through play also supports social, emotional and academic growth.

Daily routines

Children learn routines such as morning arrival, snack and lunch breaks, lining up, using bubblers and moving safely around the school. Teachers guide children as they settle in, but practising at home helps.

Best Start Assessment

At the start of the year, all Kindergarten children take part in the Best Start Assessment. This is a friendly, one-on-one activity where teachers learn about your child’s literacy and numeracy skills. It is not a test and needs no preparation.
